System scanner sniffs out the good rocks from up to 14 AU away. If he turns it off after 1 minute, he gets his 1000 ore and doesn't waste time. So if a roid only have 1000 left in it, he wastes a lot of time waiting for the cycle to finish. My buddy uses a mining barge, and his cycle is 3 minutes, and he pulls a LOT per cycle (like 3000) and it takes 3 minutes to yield. When I start drilling an asteroid, I scan it, divide the amount by my pull rate, and I know how many cycles (usually 5-6) it will take to pop it. 600 omber per minute (like me) and a roid only has 300 omber left in it, you can turn off the lasers after 30 seconds and get all that ore. You pull ore after every cycle, or whenever you turn them off. Main reason to use a SURVEY Scanner (ship module) is to see how much ore is in an asteroid. Scanner has lots more uses than that, but that's a crash course to get you started. In 2-3 minutes, I know the best spot to fire up my mining lasers. Then I warp to the best belt and start mining. In 60 seconds, I know how many omber asteroids are at each belt, and which belts have other ships there already. So I warp to the planet, then point my scanner at each belt and scan quickly. One of the planets in this system has FIFTEEN belts around it. I do small-time operations, just putting around in a cruiser on spawn day for Omber once or twice a week. Here's a more practical example of how I use the scanner to mine. You know how much Omber is there now, without traveling there. Point your camera so the planet you want to scan is touching the box on your ship. The belts are around that planet set to a 5 degree cone, and target your ship. That's narrowing it down, but let's look at the really practical use. Set it to 180 and point it at one half of the system, now you now how much Omber is on that half (within range). Pop off a 360 scan and you will now see where the Omber is. Till you get used to the scanner range, turn on planets in the overview too. Now suppose you want to find Omber in the system. The scanner scans a cone in the direction your camera is pointed. That will max it out at like 2.4 billion km. Now load that setting and open your System Scanner and set the range to 3,000,000,000. Make an overview setting that only shows player ships, containers, npc pirates, and omber. You are better setting a filter for the particular ore you are looking for or adding a particular ore to the overview once you have spotted some. There is a mining filter setup by the game for the overview. You could use the scanner set for 360¦ and say, 50k. Yep, the survey scanner is good as it shows the amounts in each asteriod. New to Eve? Interested in manufacturing stuff, or doing research on blueprints? Check out my fully-updated Science and Industry guide. I think asteroids are either under celestial entities, or have their own categories. Right-click the little triangle thing on your overview and go to the filters. Or you can make your life even easier and set your overview to show the asteroids that you want to mine. clicking on each mine seems to be an in-efficent way to do it and was wondering if there was something else I could use? I see the scanner button to look in the solar systemn I am in for different planets and asteroid belts, but as a new miner, I am looking for a way to look at the asteroids in the belt to see what I have to pick from to mine.
